IMLIL
HIGH ATLAS – BERBER VILLAGES – KIK PLATEAU – TREKKING – TOUBKALDay trip to the beautiful village of Imlil is in the heart of the Atlas Mountains at the base of the highest peak in North Africa in Mount Toubkal National Park. The terrain that surrounds this peaceful village is a rich contrast from that of the country’s lowlands. Here, pink houses are spaced unevenly through the village with numerous trees – mostly walnut – interspersed around them.
Departing from Marrakech, we take the tarred road towards Imlil. Small villages follow each other in a vast landscape planted with olive trees, separated by a natural border made of prickly pear cactuses.
We take a small loop by the lake and then head to the immense kik plateau at 1.800 m, where we will enjoy breathtaking views including the snowy summits of the High Atlas Mountains. We’ll stop in the small mountain village of Aremd. Here people come every Saturday to the Asni Berber Market to sell their goods and buy their needs.
We continue to Imlil Valley, which is known for its walnuts, apples and cherries. From Imlil village we go on a short trek by foot or mule to the famous Kasbah Toubkal, where we’ll enjoy lunch and a panoramic view of the green gardens and the peak of Mount Toubkal. Part of the movie “Seven Years in Tibet” was filmed at this kasbah – and it’s easy to see why. You might not be in Tibet, but you will feel like being there.
